Jimi Hendrix’s hometown was thrust further into the music spotlight in the 1990s thanks to its iconic “Seattle Sound” and grunge groups like Pearl Jam and Soundgarden. The underground music scene continues to thrive as do other music genres. Take a stroll through the Museum of Pop Culture and the Jimi Hendrix Park and attend a concert by the Luck Ngi Musical Society, the oldest Cantonese opera club in the U.S.

During the month of March, the University of Washington quad turns pink from the 29 cherry blossom trees that populate the quad. Since the 1960s, the pretty-in-pink petals have signaled the start of spring to students and locals. The cherry blossoms usually hit their peak by the third week of March. Progress is documented in real time on the @uwcherryblossom Twitter account.

Another option for doing an Inception vacation inside of a vacation is spending a day during your trip to Portland in Seattle. The two cities are close enough that it isn't a haul, but they're both significant enough to be on your list of destinations. You can pair the cities by doing a slow explore in one while you do a quick day-long exploration of the other.
