Bali provides a wonderful mash-up of traditional Balinese Hinduism and new-age yoga culture. Where else can you sign up for a high-intensity aerial yoga class, down a green smoothie, and then head to join locals taking part in a traditional religious ceremony? Home to dozens of yoga shalas (AKA, studios) that are just as unique as your practice, Bali is the perfect place to reconnect and dive within. From teak structures that overlook chalky white cliffs to bamboo huts surrounded by jungle with views of the volcanoes, there’s an abundance of incredible places to deepen your practice and spiritual journey.
We vetted some of the top studios on the island to find dreamiest shalas in Bali. Here are 15 of our absolute faves!
Yoga Shalas in Seseh
Udara Bali
My favorite place to practice has to be The Udara. Located just 15 minutes outside the bustling streets of Canggu, Udara Bali has four yoga shalas, including an intimate, three-story high shala that fits only eight people an provides unparalleled views of the ocean. The Udara also offers exquisite accommodation, a fantastic restaurant, and is located on the beachfront, so get ready for morning beach walks, midday yoga, and nutritious meals.
Yoga Shalas in Canggu
The Practice
Sat on one of the busiest streets in Canggu, The Practice provides a still, soothing, and nurturing environment in which to practice yoga. The yoga shala, made from both traditional and modern materials, is set within a lush rice paddy where world-class teachers, such as Octavio Salvado, the founder of The Practice, teach Tantric Hatha Yoga, mediation, Yoga Teacher Training, and a whole array of workshops. If you’re looking for a place to go within and deepen your understanding of yoga whilst still staying in Canggu, The Practice is the one for you.
Desa Seni
Desa Seni, located in Berawa, Canggu, is a tranquil haven away from all of the motorbikes and busy cafes. Their beautiful wooden yoga shala is situated at the back of the property, complete with gardens, saltwater pool and spa. Whether you’re staying for a retreat in one of the traditional villas or dropping in for a session of Hatha, Desi Seni’s experienced yoga teachers and harmonious grounds will ensure you leave centered and full of peace.
Samadi
Located on the popular Padang Linjong street in Canggu, Samadi is the perfect community yoga shala. If you’re seeking a comfortable, friendly, community-driven place to practice, this one’s for you. Samadi features an intimate yoga shala towards the back of the well-maintained Balinese garden (which is also home to accommodation and a popular cafe) where experienced yoga teachers will guide you through Ashtanga Yoga, Vinyasa, Hatha, Yin, and more. Samadi also regularly does breathwork, ecstatic dance, and sound healing workshops, so look out for those!
Taman Nauli
Situated just off the main road into Canggu, Taman Nauli is a boutique hotel that features two serene yoga shalas on its grounds. These two intimate shalas sit within the Balinese garden that features a river, tropical plants, temples, and several stone-carved statues. Whilst practicing at Taman Nauli, you’ll be whisked away into such a state of peace that you’ll forget you’re only ten minutes from one of the busiest areas on the island. Think that it can’t get any better? Well, it can. All of the classes here are multi level, so you have the entire yoga class schedule at your disposal!
Yoga Shalas in Ubud
The Yoga Barn
Located in the center of yogi-favorite Ubud, The Yoga Barn is one of the most popular yoga shalas on the island…and for good reason! Set in a vibrant landscape that screams tropical serenity, The Yoga Barn holds seven spaces that are perfect for yoga practice, whether you’re into Hatha, Yin, or Vinyasa. My personal favorite studio has to be the Lotus Studio (#5): a more intimate, quiet space, with views through the floor and ceiling that take you out towards the jungle.
Intuitive Flow
Nestled in the trees near the well-known Campuhan Ridge Walk in Ubud, Intuitive Flow is a yoga shala with views for days! Whether you sign up for a one-off class, decide to stay for one of the incredible retreats, or visit to complete your Yoga Teacher Training, practicing in this yoga shala will make you feel seen and held by the surrounding jungle. With experienced teachers like founder Linda Madani guiding you through your practice, you know you’re in good hands at Intuitive Flow.
Ubud Yoga Centre
Ubud Yoga Centre, located just outside of Central Ubud, is a modern architectural yoga shala dream. The centre features a restaurant, gong shop, gift shop, wine bar, and shala. It’s set above a palm tree encrusted ravine, perfectly debuting the Bali duality of modernity and nature. Yin, Ashtanga, Bikram, Vinyasa, and Hatha flow are all taught here by experienced yoga teachers, guiding you while you stare out at the endless jungle.
Naya Retreat
The Naya Retreat, located outside Ubud and set in a dense jungle, is the perfect place to head if you’re looking to fully immerse yourself in yogi culture while in Bali. The open-air, joglo-style wooden yoga shala showcases 1,300 square feet of space designed specifically for spiritual and yoga practice. Get hot with Vinyasa or relax with Hatha while listening to the gentle sound of the surrounding jungle and river below.
Taksu
Taksu is your home for everything wellness in Central Ubud, featuring a farm-to-table restaurant, spa, wellness center, and three yoga shalas, all set within a tropical garden. Each yoga shala is beautifully decorated and surrounded by the jungle, with my personal favorite, The River Shala, set alongside a small stream so you can enjoy the sound of flowing water while getting your own flow on. The Balinese team of yoga teachers offer Hatha, Yin, Restorative, and Vinyasa flow for all levels.
Yoga Shalas in Sanur
Umah Shakti
Set just 1km back from the pearly white shores of Sanur, Umah Shakti is a small, family-run yoga shala that sits within a traditional Balinese housing compound. If you’re looking to practice somewhere that feels like home, Umah Shakti is the place to go. Experienced Indonesian teachers offer Vinyasa, Hatha, Yin, and even Anti-Gravity Yoga in a secure and tranquil environment.
Yoga Shalas in Amed
Blue Earth Village
Sat on the east coast of Bali in Amed, Blue Earth Village is a community-led and run hub for all things yoga, food, and freediving. The Blue Earth Village’s yoga shala has one of the most impressive views on the island, creating a framed view of active volcano Gunung Agung through the bamboo shala structure. Although traditional yoga is taught here, teachers also apply some technique from freediving, so it may be a little different from regular practice.
Yoga Shalas in Uluwatu
YinSide Yoga
YinSide Yoga, based between Bingin Beach and Padang Padang beach in Uluwatu, is the upmarket, modern yoga shala you’ve been looking for. Yinside Yoga is home to an intimate shala that holds Yin yoga practices guided by the owner, Hayley Wenn, and other experienced guest teachers. Set on top of a sustainable, ethical, and eco-friendly shop, YinSide Yoga is the perfect slice of tranquillity and guilt-free shopping combined.
Morning Light Yoga (Uluwatu Surf Villas)
Morning Light Yoga is an incredibly charming yoga shala that has views of both the jungle and the ocean. Let’s be real, what’s better than that? This open-air teak yoga shala is lifted above the garden below to make the ideal practice space, with experienced yoga teachers guiding you through classes at 7:30 am every day. Bonus: you get a free coconut to sip on and enjoy the view afterward!
Yoga Searcher
Located in Uluwatu, not too far from the famous Padang Padang beach, Yoga Searcher is home to a selection of eco-lodges, a restaurant, spa, and two yoga shalas. Both shalas are intricately made from local wood and stand above the eco-lodges, garden, and pool below. This is one of the only places on the island that you can be guided through Ayuryoga: a mixture of Ayurveda, meditation, and yoga.
