Minneapolis

Tips from the community

The Midwest has long been a beacon of Black music, from the invention of house music to the start of Motown. AFROPUNK, a traveling music festival, is happening in Minneapolis this Juneteenth. On the line-up are signature panel discussions called “Solution Sessions,” opps to meet with your fave Black travel bloggers, and live music featuring performances from artists like Ari Lennox, Sango, and Noname.  At the Capri Theater, Juneteenth Jubilee— a Black burlesque show—will celebrate the history of Black and brown bodies in burlesque. On June 18th, there will be a Juneteenth parade at Bethune Park, followed by an after-party with food trucks, live entertainment, and vendors. Honor the life of Minneapolis native George Floyd at George Floyd Square on the 19th with a free block party featuring a DJ, vendors, and live performances.

Afropunk 2022: June 18th to 19th, 2022 If there was an OG of Black music festivals, it’d be Afropunk. What started as a safe space for Black alternative folks to express themselves through music and fashion has grown into a full-blown movement. From New York to Paris, Afropunk is a traveling festival, community, and outlet of creative expression for many. The stages of Afropunk feature Black artists across musical genres, from Solange to Lizzo. Each year, AFROPUNK has a different theme. This year in Minneapolis, get ready for a weekend-long Juneteenth event, with focuses on Midwestern music history and celebrations of Black history and joy. The best part about going to Afropunk is witnessing the fashion. Fros are in full bloom, African wax print clothing is abundant, and no one is afraid to accessorize.

Minneapolis was the birthplace of singer-songwriter Prince who pioneered a unique style of music, Minneapolis Sound, a subgenre of funk rock, in the 1970s. Prince fans can follow in his footsteps by shopping at The Electric Fetus, one of Prince’s favorite record shops, dancing at First Avenue, a downtown danceteria where Prince filmed Purple Rain, and visiting Paisley Park, Prince’s home and recording studio. Stay a stone’s throw away in nearby Bloomington, Minnesota, home to Mall of America, the largest shopping center in the U.S. Bloomington, the 5th largest city in Minnesota, boasts 40 plus hotels, offering something for every type of traveler.

Our favorite- Twin Cities Pride is returning in 2021 as one of the best and brightest pride festivals in the country. Minneapolis and St. Louis combine to present a "Maskquerade" party, because celebrating our unique selves can be done safely, working to forge towards a future where LGBTQ+ can be accepted and loved everywhere for their authenticity. So get your rainbow-colored mask and sunglasses ready for a Pride you will never forget.
