Visit Rancho Cordova's Summer of Shenanigans Gets the Whole City Exploring
Visit Rancho Cordova is launching the Summer of Shenanigans, a three-month photo bucket list challenge powered by Seeker XP that invites travelers and locals to explore dozens of the city’s best activities, restaurants, breweries, and outdoor adventures from June 1 through August 31, 2026. Participants earn digital badges and raffle entries for local experience giveaways every time they check in with a geolocated photo, giving the DMO a summer-long stream of first-party data and user-generated content to fuel future campaigns.
Overview
Summer of Shenanigans is a free, city-wide participation challenge that covers the full range of what Rancho Cordova has to offer: paddleboarding on Lake Natoma, boba café crawls, color walks in local parks, craft brewery visits along the Barrel District, farmers market runs, and live events from Moonlight Movies to the Cordova 4th of July Spectacular.
Rather than publishing a static summer guide, Visit Rancho Cordova built an interactive experience on Seeker XP where every item on the list becomes a check-in opportunity. Participants sign up free, submit geolocated photos from their adventures, and unlock digital badges tied to specific activity categories. Points from each check-in accumulate as raffle entries for local experience prizes, with a grand prize drawing at the end of summer.
The result is a three-month activation that keeps audiences engaged well past a single weekend, drives foot traffic into local businesses, and generates authentic UGC the destination can use in marketing for years.

About Visit Rancho Cordova
Visit Rancho Cordova is the destination marketing organization for Rancho Cordova, California, a city of more than 80,000 residents sitting just east of Sacramento in Gold Country. The DMO promotes the city’s full range of experiences to both visitors and locals: outdoor recreation on the American River and Lake Natoma, a thriving craft beverage scene anchored by the Barrel District, international dining across dozens of cuisines, and a calendar packed with community events from the California Mermaid Convention to the Cordova 4th of July Spectacular.
Rancho Cordova has genuine local character rather than marquee attractions: the kind of city that rewards the traveler who slows down and looks around. That positioning creates both an opportunity and a challenge for the DMO: there’s a lot to discover here, but it takes more than a brochure to get visitors and residents to engage with the full picture. Summer is the city’s strongest season, with water sports, outdoor events, and al fresco dining all in full swing, and Visit Rancho Cordova wanted an activation that matched that energy.
Summer of Shenanigans is the answer: a challenge format that turns the DMO’s existing content expertise into an interactive experience, distributes engagement across the whole city rather than concentrating it at one venue, and builds an owned email list and UGC library along the way. Seeker XP’s photo check-in mechanics, geolocation verification, and digital badge system gave the team the infrastructure to launch a summer-long program without adding staff overhead.
How It Works
Participants join Summer of Shenanigans for free through a sign-up widget embedded directly on the Visit Rancho Cordova summer landing page. After registering with their name and email address, they receive access to the full Seeker XP experience, either via desktop or as a saved shortcut on their phone’s home screen, so the challenge is always one tap away when they’re out exploring the city.
The bucket list covers dozens of Rancho Cordova activities organized across multiple categories. To earn a check-in, participants visit a listed location or complete a listed activity, then submit a photo through the Seeker XP interface. Most check-ins require geolocation confirmation alongside the photo, giving Visit Rancho Cordova verified proof of place. Some items use a simpler text or photo-only response for activities where GPS verification isn’t practical. Each successful check-in earns points, and those points become raffle entries for local experience prizes. Participants can complete as many or as few items as they want, at their own pace, anytime between June 1 and August 31.
Activity categories in the challenge include:
- Water recreation: paddleboarding, kayaking, and rafting on Lake Natoma and the American River
- Outdoor exploration: trails, parks, and color walks throughout the city
- Craft beverages: Barrel District breweries, cocktail bars, boba cafés, and local coffee shops
- Food and dining: international restaurants, farmers markets, and local eateries
- Community events: Moonlight Movies, Concerts in the Park, and other summer events on the city calendar
As participants rack up check-ins, they unlock digital badges tied to specific activity categories. A grand prize drawing takes place at the end of summer, with winners contacted via their sign-up email. Every photo submitted throughout the challenge is available for Visit Rancho Cordova to use in future promotions, turning each participant into a contributor to the destination’s content library.

Why We Love It
-
A Summer Guide That Actually Gets Used
Most destination summer content gets read once and forgotten. Summer of Shenanigans turns the same information into a recurring reason to open the app, because every activity is a check-in opportunity and every check-in has something at stake.
-
Foot Traffic Distributed Across the City
Rather than concentrating attention on one venue or event, the bucket list format sends participants to local breweries, restaurants, parks, farmers markets, and community events over three months, spreading economic benefit across a much wider footprint.
-
First-Party Data and a Growing Email List
Every sign-up is a first-party email capture tied to real behavioral data: which locations got checked in, which categories drove the most engagement, and where participants actually went.
-
UGC That Keeps Coming All Summer
Participants agree at sign-up that their submitted photos can be used in Visit Rancho Cordova promotions. By August 31, the DMO will have a library of authentic, geolocated images from across the city, generated by real visitors and locals, available for use in campaigns year-round.
