Kawachi Wisteria Garden

A serene park in Kitakyushu, famed for its stunning tunnels of hanging wisteria flowers, attracting visitors for floral displays.

Tips from the community

This one feels like a pastel portal straight into a freakin’ fairytale. Saunter into a periwinkle-colored tunnel made from over 150 flowering wisteria plants, with varying shades of light and dark during the blooming season. Kawachi Fuji Gardens are a bit of a hike from Tokyo, located about 5 hours away by train, but we think it’s worth the hype. Just be sure to visit between April and May, otherwise you’ll be greeted by an empty mass of twisted branches. And that’s just not the move.

Nestled in the foothills of Kitakyushu Fukuoka Japan, Kawachi Wisteria Garden is a dream-like destination where visitors are transported to a world of pastel-colored blooms hanging from trellises and trees. The garden's iconic tunnels of wisteria flowers offer a sensory experience like no other as the sweet fragrance takes over and the colors merge into a rainbow of purples, pinks, and whites. From late April to early May, witnessing the seemingly endless sea of wisteria blooms is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and one of the brightest and most colorful places on earth.

Taking a leisure stroll under a canvas of electric violet is the norm at Kawachi Wisteria Garden, one of Japan’s (many) gorgeous botanical attractions. We hadn’t heard of a “flower tunnel” until we came across this place, and we gotta say, bright purple is quite the shade for it — especially when it’s 100 meters in length.
