Visit Big Sky Made Community Week a Town-Wide Check-In Challenge
Visit Big Sky, Big Sky, Montana’s official destination marketing organization, used Seeker XP to gamify Community Week 2024, turning a week of free resident-focused events into a town-wide check-in challenge via the GO Big Sky web app. Locals checked in at everything from ribbon cuttings to free workouts, earning tiered badges and raffle entries for prizes drawn from Big Sky businesses.
Overview
Big Sky Community Week is an annual celebration co-organized by Visit Big Sky and the Big Sky Chamber of Commerce to connect residents with neighbors, local nonprofits, and the businesses that keep the mountain town running. For 2024, organizers introduced a gamified check-in challenge through the GO Big Sky web app: residents opened the app at each event they attended, logged a check-in, and watched their badge tier climb throughout the week. Each tier unlocked a new raffle drawing for prizes from local businesses. It was the first time Visit Big Sky deployed Seeker XP passport technology at a community event, with plans to run it again.

About Visit Big Sky
Visit Big Sky is the official destination marketing and management organization for Big Sky, Montana, operating as a 501(c)(6) nonprofit. Funded through the Big Sky Resort Area District’s resort tax, the organization leads the development and promotion of authentic tourism experiences through research and stakeholder collaboration. Its mission is to grow Big Sky’s economy while sustaining the quality of life for the residents and workers who make the community what it is.
The organization works alongside the Big Sky Chamber of Commerce on programs that serve both visitors and year-round locals. As Big Sky has grown into one of Montana’s premier resort destinations, Visit Big Sky has increasingly focused on the people living inside the economy, not just passing through it. Community Week is one expression of that: a week of free, resident-first events designed to build connection, awareness, and shared investment in Big Sky’s future. Now in its third year, the 2024 edition drew residents to ribbon cuttings, civic discussions, community coffee sessions, and fitness events across the area.
To deepen engagement at Community Week 2024, Visit Big Sky partnered with Seeker XP to introduce a digital check-in challenge through the GO Big Sky web app. The goal was to give locals a low-friction way to participate actively rather than just attend passively, and to reward the residents who showed up the most with prizes from the businesses they know.
How it Worked
Residents accessed the GO Big Sky web app at go.visitbigsky.com on their phones. No download, no account required. At each Community Week event, they opened the app and checked in, adding to their total throughout the week.
Check-ins accumulated toward four badge tiers, with each tier unlocking a new raffle drawing. The more events a resident attended, the bigger the prize pool they entered.
Community check-ins included:
- Free fitness classes and workouts at the BASE Community Center
- Community coffee sessions hosted by Lone Mountain Land Company and Wellness in Action
- Ribbon cuttings at new community infrastructure: the Fire Training Facility, Water Resources Recovery Facility, TIGER Grant trail, and the new Big Sky Post Office
- Civic discussions including the Joint County Commission Meeting and the State of the Community Event
Participants who hit 10 or more check-ins earned the Summit Seeker badge, the top tier, and entry into a drawing for a $500 gift card. A bonus Workout Warrior badge went to the resident who logged the most check-ins at wellness activities. All prize winners at any tier also received an RTIC Road Trip Personal Cooler.

Why We Love It
-
Built for Residents
Most DMO gamification chases tourist eyeballs. Visit Big Sky ran this one entirely for locals, using Community Week as the backdrop for a check-in challenge that rewarded residents for participating in their own community.
-
Local Businesses Took Center Stage
Every prize drawing featured gift cards to Big Sky restaurants, retailers, and local institutions, from Conoco and Country Market to Big Sky Resort and Hungry Moose. The activation kept every prize dollar inside the local economy.
-
Escalating Stakes Drove Week-Long Participation
The four-tier badge structure meant one check-in was enough to enter, but every additional event raised the stakes. Residents who showed up once had a reason to come back the next day, turning a casual drop-in into a week-long habit.
-
Civic Events Got a Game Mechanic
Ribbon cuttings and county commission meetings don't typically draw a crowd. By wrapping them in a check-in challenge with real prize stakes, Visit Big Sky gave residents a tangible reason to show up to the civic moments that matter most for the community's future.
