Another day in middle Italy, another hill town. Only this one’s not just another hill town! Back in the 1300s, it was a major palatial residence of the popes. Later, your homeboy Pope Clement VII took refuge here while Charles V sacked Rome. And everyone’s favorite 13th-century Catholic theologian, a Prof. T to the Aquinas, even taught at the local university! Yep, you’re walking in the steps of history in Orvieto. Be sure to check out the stunning filigrees of Orvieto Cathedral on the main piazza. Oh, and make an expedition into the maze of subterranean tunnels beneath the town – there’s said to be more than 1,000 of them!
