Just when you thought you’d left the mountains behind for good, you enter the Apennines. These ancient peaks carve through the heart of Italy, running from toe to tip. Arguably their most dramatic section rises with the Apuan Alps around Carrara. Delve within and you could find yourself clambering on sheer-drop trails over the soaring ridges of Monte Pisanino. Alternatively, there’s a home-cooked lunch of hearty Tuscan (yes, this is Tuscany!) staples waiting down in Trattoria da Morena.
