Despite having years of solo travel under my belt, I still get a tad flustered when stepping into unfamiliar countries. Even in the midst of those moments, I know I\u2019m in control and capable. In the context of safety, you can gain wicked valuable insights by connecting with local women. I\u2019ve been told where to go, where not to go, who to generally trust, and who to be wary of. In fact, many of the risks I\u2019ve taken have ended up being the very best experiences in my travels. Gutsy as it may be, I\u2019m a massive proponent of trusting the moment and listening to that feeling in your stomach. It\u2019s led me away from some bad situations, and contrastingly, has immersed me into others that have been life changing. It\u2019s yielded lifelong friendships, spontaneous meals, education about local cultures, and long-term travel buddies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Do<\/strong>: let your hair down and have some fun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t<\/strong>: allow yourself to feel pressured by others. I know I am. If you\u2019re anything like me, that rule just doesn\u2019t work. A city\u2019s energy completely transforms at night and I can\u2019t fathom the thought of avoiding the experience because of \u201cwhat ifs.\u201d I do, however, follow a couple rules of thumb when it comes to nighttime adventuring. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep your wits about you by staying around fairly populated areas, roam near others, and ask locals for advice on safe neighborhoods post sundown. I\u2019ve done my fair share of risky late night walks \u2014 some on purpose, others because my arrival bus decided to stop at 4 decrepit rest stops and the driver nearly fell asleep at the wheel. It&#8217;s always a toss up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Do<\/strong>: try to keep other people in sight if you\u2019re walking at night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t<\/strong>: let fear stop you from experiencing a country at night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hide your valuables out of view as much as possible<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/article\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/50879470_252557132331333_2782130280234161154_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10112\"\/><figcaption>La Pedrera, Rocha, Uruguay. instagram.com\/travelempa<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It should be a no brainer, but oftentimes isn\u2019t. Be as inconspicuous as possible while traveling, especially when you\u2019re in transit with everything you have. I\u2019ve heard so many stories of travelers getting their phones snatched right from their hands in public\u2014and most of them were so caught off guard they couldn\u2019t even react. When I was in Brazil, I bought a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Holder-Transparent-360%C2%B0Rotation-Finger-Compatible\/dp\/B07HQMJ35D\/ref=asc_df_B07HQMJ35D\/?tag=hyprod-20&amp;linkCode=df0&amp;hvadid=309821967799&amp;hvpos=1o1&amp;hvnetw=g&amp;hvrand=15816704023436132404&amp;hvpone=&amp;hvptwo=&amp;hvqmt=&amp;hvdev=c&amp;hvdvcmdl=&amp;hvlocint=&amp;hvlocphy=9019661&amp;hvtargid=pla-570066631563&amp;psc=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\"> cell phone ring holder<\/a> off the street for $0.50 and it definitely makes me feel a bit more at ease when I need to check my phone while out and about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Do<\/strong>: get a luggage or backpack lock and stow valuables deep within your bags.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t<\/strong>: ever leave anything unattended. Not even for a second!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Keep your bag(s) next to you at all times<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/article\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/50119006_815020648831366_521473616007466288_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10111\"\/><figcaption>Medell\u00edn, Antioquia. instagram.com\/travelempa<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s with true disgust that I have to say this: there have been many accounts of sexual harassment from taxi and<a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/uber-releases-a-list-of-21-types-of-sexual-misconduct-r-1830405376\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\"> Uber drivers<\/a> around the world. Not to mention, scams are quite common as well\u2014anything from overcharging at the end or taking you on a roundabout way to up the fare meter. I fell prey to overcharging in Bogota, Colombia, but was too damn tired to even argue. I never put my backpack in trunks (unless I absolutely have to) in the event that I might need to make a quick escape. If a driver makes you feel uncomfortable or unsafe, bolt out the door with your bag at the next stoplight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Do<\/strong>: pack light! It\u2019s easier to get moving fast when you have less weight to lug around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t<\/strong>: get going without agreeing on a price first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Party on, but try not to get <em>too<\/em> drunk<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/article\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/54511337_126540418425410_5200830027731931065_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10114\"\/><figcaption>Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. instagram.com\/travelempa<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Okay, okay \u2014 I\u2019d be a downright<em> <\/em>liar if I said I hadn\u2019t broken this rule in some places around the world, but it\u2019s incredibly important. The excitement of travel can make it easy to get carried away, and $1 beers don\u2019t hurt either. Nevertheless, I\u2019m no party pooper. There\u2019s a happy medium that allows you to enjoy nightlife <em>and<\/em> a hearty serving of pisco sours (shoutout to you, Peru). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you see me in a bar or club, I\u2019m always holding my drink from the top so that its covered. It\u2019s utter bullsh*t that we have to be so careful, but \u2018better safe than sorry\u2019 is a thought worth following. Stick with people you trust, even if you&#8217;ve only known them for a short amount of time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Do<\/strong>: have some fun! Go tear up the dance floor and try local liquors!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t<\/strong>: leave your drink unattended or with anyone you don&#8217;t know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Keep friends and family in the loop<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/article\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/50762769_2215986641797785_6013613737164442007_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10121\"\/><figcaption>Buenos Aires, Argentina. instagram.com\/trevelempa<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If your parents haven\u2019t already badgered you for updates, be sure to do it anyway. Not only is it a nice thing to do (hey mom &amp; dad!), but it\u2019s important that your whereabouts are generally known. No need to send location pins every single day, but a simple <em>hey I\u2019m alive and I made it to Santorini <\/em>is beneficial for everyone involved. If social media is your thing, keep friends and family in the loop wherever you\u2019re roaming with a few simple updates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Do<\/strong>: check in via text, email, post card, or carrier pigeon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t<\/strong>: get <a href=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/travel-doesnt-need-to-be-instagrammable\/#\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"overly immersed in your Instagram feed (opens in a new tab)\">overly immersed in your Instagram feed<\/a> while on the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dress like the locals and try to blend in<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/article\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/59653882_827496557612719_4743532081343260012_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10116\"\/><figcaption>Marrakech, Morocco. instagram.com\/travelempa<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Think of blending in as a game. Dressing as the locals do is important for two reasons: it\u2019s respectful and reduces the<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-ca\/lifestyle\/travel\/20-ways-youre-being-targeted-as-a-tourist\/ss-BBTXziB\" target=\"_blank\"> targeted tourist effect<\/a>. During my travels in Morocco, I made sure to wear long skirts and cover up more than I would in my home country. One particularly hot day, I neglected to cover my shoulders and ended up getting shoved by a man in the street. It could have been a fluke of an occurrence, but I couldn\u2019t help think it had to do with showing a little more skin. It\u2019s our duty as travelers to learn about local customs and live as if we were regularly part of their society \u2014 even if we don&#8217;t always agree with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Do<\/strong>: research countries before you go or ask women who have been there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t<\/strong>: over pack. Trust me, it\u2019s simply a pain to carry all of that extra stuff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Arrive when it works best \u2014 just know the map beforehand<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/article\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/60010947_151660182545091_6469050091297215024_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10118\"\/><figcaption>Berlin, Germany. instagram.com\/travelempa<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve read many pieces that urge women to arrive and depart during the day, and it\u2019s not bad advice at all. But the thing is: it\u2019s not entirely realistic. I\u2019ve rolled into unknown countries at all odd hours of the night, often dazed by lack of sleep (or an aggressive neck cramp from a bus ride).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Have a concrete plan of where you\u2019re staying and how to get there. If arriving by plane or bus, get the low down on the taxi or Uber situation. Skip public transportation super late at night, unless you\u2019re already well versed with the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Do<\/strong>: arrive when it truly works best for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t<\/strong>: show up without any type of area knowledge or plan at 3am.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Most importantly: don\u2019t let fear stop you<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/article\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/60367859_137891353960445_5098177963425893470_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10122\"\/><figcaption>Marrakech, Morocco. instagram.com\/travelempa<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>People are in awe of solo women who travel the globe. And damn straight, they should be \u2014 we\u2019re a kickass bunch! It takes a lot of bravery and gusto to do what we do. I once had a man tell me that I shouldn\u2019t travel in South America because it\u2019s \u201cunsafe for a woman.\u201d He might\u2019ve been right in some capacity, but equally bad things can happen right at home.
