And nowhere is this alcohol-fuelled ingenuity better demonstrated than in the city of Budapest, Hungary. In the last 15 years, this town has seen an explosion of what the locals call <em>ruin bars<\/em> \u2014  dilapidated factories, warehouses, banks, or homes that were saved from the scrap-heap and turned into unique and <em>entirely awesome <\/em>bars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now a major tourist attraction, the ruin bars of Budapest see millions of people walk through their doors each year. Dozens now dot the city\u2019s Jewish quarter, leading to that most first world of problems \u2014  <em>too much choice<\/em>. So let\u2019s take a moment to separate the wheat from the chaff. If you\u2019ve only got so much time to spend wandering the streets of Budapest, these are the five ruin bars that should sit at the very top of your hit list:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"marker-heading seeker-place seeker-place-heading\" data-latitude=\"47.497005\" data-longitude=\"19.06336\" data-placeurl=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/app\/place\/JlfaNQ0p\/szimpla-kert-budapest-hungary\" data-placeid=\"985\" class=\"wp-block-seeker-place-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/app\/place\/JlfaNQ0p\/szimpla-kert-budapest-hungary\">Szimpla Kert<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-latitude=\"47.497005\" data-longitude=\"19.06336\" src=\"https:\/\/d39ghehfp8sbx4.cloudfront.net\/media\/img\/1\/28f771df-4896-46ed-a999-55368a24e719-1400.jpg?placeid=985&amp;name=Szimpla%20Kert&amp;lat=47.497005&amp;lng=19.06336\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Close your eyes and think of the coolest bar you\u2019ve ever seen. Multiply that by two. And by two again. You\u2019ve now got a bar about a quarter as cool as <a href=\"https:\/\/szimpla.hu\/szimpla-kert\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Szimpla Kert (opens in a new tab)\">Szimpla Kert<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Szimpla is the original ruin bar, and despite competition coming from everywhere, it\u2019s still the best, and <em>by far<\/em>. Despite its relative age, despite being overrun by tourists, and despite the staff being ruder here than anywhere else, Szimpla is the gold standard to which every other ruin bar is held.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-latitude=\"47.497005\" data-longitude=\"19.06336\" src=\"https:\/\/d39ghehfp8sbx4.cloudfront.net\/media\/img\/1\/f3fc7734-c212-4c04-9e6d-4295c8f7dc9a-1400.jpg?placeid=985&amp;name=Szimpla%20Kert&amp;lat=47.497005&amp;lng=19.06336\" alt=\"Szimpla Kert, Budapest, Hungary. instagram.com\/pavlos.pd\"\/><figcaption>Szimpla Kert, Budapest, Hungary. instagram.com\/pavlos.pd<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Clusterf*ck<\/em>. No word in the English language better articulates what hides behind the vintage doors of this joint. Szimpla might cover an enormous area, but it is <em>full<\/em>. Every single surface is either scrawled with graffiti, loaded with wall hangings, or jammed full of third- or fourth-hand furniture. Every room has its own feel, although an overarching theme of sensory overload runs through the entire bar. There\u2019s no way you\u2019ll be able to ingest it all in one trip, but happily this is the sort of place that you\u2019ll be aching to get back to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Szimpla is the most pleasurable assault on the senses you\u2019ll ever have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"marker-heading seeker-place seeker-place-heading\" data-latitude=\"47.500519\" data-longitude=\"19.065283\" data-placeurl=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/app\/place\/i6GUUVcF\/instant-club-budapest-hungary\" data-placeid=\"986\" class=\"wp-block-seeker-place-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/app\/place\/i6GUUVcF\/instant-club-budapest-hungary\">Instant<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-latitude=\"47.500519\" data-longitude=\"19.065283\" src=\"https:\/\/d39ghehfp8sbx4.cloudfront.net\/media\/img\/1\/b2ee85a4-6053-42ae-8d9b-6bc6272b6314-1400.jpg?placeid=986&amp;name=Instant%20Club&amp;lat=47.500519&amp;lng=19.065283\" alt=\"Instant, Budapest, Hungary. instagram.com\/instant.fogas.budapest\"\/><figcaption>Instant, Budapest, Hungary. instagram.com\/instant.fogas.budapest<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Szimpla is big. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Instant (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/instant.co.hu\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\">Instant<\/a> is bigger. The biggest<em> <\/em>in fact. This is a one-stop party shop, made up of a seemingly endless amount of bars, music rooms, and dance floors \u2014  if someone invites you to <em>Fogas<\/em>, <em>L\u00e4rm<\/em>, <em>Liebling<\/em>, <em>Pont<\/em>, <em>Robot<\/em>, <em>FRAME <\/em>or <em>UnderWelt<\/em>, they just mean one of the many clubs inside the Instant complex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first ruin bar on this site was actually Fogas, which began in 2009 as a pokey one room venue. Over the years, that little bar slowly swallowed up the surrounding space, and by the time Instant moved in and merged with the ever-expanding complex in 2017, it had become the largest ruin bar in the land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-latitude=\"47.500519\" data-longitude=\"19.065283\" src=\"https:\/\/d39ghehfp8sbx4.cloudfront.net\/media\/img\/1\/6cc22daf-c2ad-4de1-9269-35aaff6e3b26-1400.jpg?placeid=986&amp;name=Instant%20Club&amp;lat=47.500519&amp;lng=19.065283\" alt=\"Instant, Budapest, Hungary. instagram.com\/instant.fogas.budapest\"\/><figcaption>Instant, Budapest, Hungary. instagram.com\/instant.fogas.budapest<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Be warned: there\u2019s every chance you\u2019ll get lost in Instant during your first visit. The psychedelic decorations, thumping bass, and generous pours by the bar staff can see even a seasoned scoutmaster becoming disoriented. But that\u2019s part of the charm \u2014  by getting lost, you\u2019ll stumble upon some no-name DJ busting out a mega set, or a young MC spitting fire on one of the small stages underground. Housed in a former Transylvanian restaurant, this place is what would happen if a hoarder married a witch and held a cocktail party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like Szimpla, the walls here are all a-clutter, but unlike Szimpla, the theme that runs through the place is slightly creepy. Doll heads, weird religious paraphernalia, those stick things that were hanging from the trees in The Blair Witch Project; if you\u2019re a fan of Tim Burton, you\u2019ll be a fan of Csendes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-latitude=\"47.391476\" data-longitude=\"19.121464\" src=\"https:\/\/d39ghehfp8sbx4.cloudfront.net\/media\/img\/1\/688fae6f-ee29-41f1-a1ed-c986015e8705-1400.jpg?placeid=4017&amp;name=Csendes%20Street&amp;lat=47.391476&amp;lng=19.121464\" alt=\"Csendes, Budapest, Hungary. instagram.com\/deliaguastamacchia\"\/><figcaption>Csendes, Budapest, Hungary. instagram.com\/deliaguastamacchia<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The atmosphere is laid back though, and the food, cocktails, and wines are all top notch. All your Free Willy fantasies (apart from <em>that <\/em>one) will come true at <a href=\"https:\/\/kuplung.net\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Kuplung (opens in a new tab)\">Kuplung<\/a>, provided you\u2019re plastered enough to mistake a painted animal for the real thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Home to a life-size piece of whale graffiti that stretches from one end of the beer garden to the other, this garage-turned-ruin bar pays homage to the big blue. Kuplung is a ruin in every sense of the word \u2014  a shabby wooden gate offers outsiders no clue as to what\u2019s hidden inside, and even when you do wander in, the surrounding skyline is dominated by derelict soviet era buildings that look very ready to tumble on top of you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-latitude=\"47.501446\" data-longitude=\"19.061563\" src=\"https:\/\/d39ghehfp8sbx4.cloudfront.net\/media\/img\/1\/3d6b6450-e119-4e23-a98f-25bef37f08f8-1400.jpg?placeid=4018&amp;name=Kir%C3%A1ly%20u.%2046&amp;lat=47.501446&amp;lng=19.061563\" alt=\"Kuplung, Budapest, Hungary. instagram.com\/travel_airplane_mode\n\"\/><figcaption>Kuplung, Budapest, Hungary. instagram.com\/travel_airplane_mode\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>But all that decay is more than balanced out by the warmth of the place. The staff are welcoming, and a swarm of friendly jellyfish that hang from Kuplung\u2019s ceiling bob and shake to the live tunes and DJ sets played most nights. Sure, you should be chowing down on goulash right now. But you\u2019ve got a hankering for Mexican <em>that<\/em> <em>you just can\u2019t shake<\/em>. Not a problem \u2014  one of the city\u2019s best ruin bars is also where you\u2019ll find some of the city\u2019s best Mexican.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ell\u00e1t\u00f3 Kert is a small town Mexican cantina that somehow ended up in the fanciest part of Budapest\u2019s Jewish Quarter.
