The whole region is entirely unlike any other place you\u2019ve ever seen. This magical landscape is covered in hollowed out and inhabited cones of rock, dotted with valleys famous for their rare coloring, and full of exciting activities to keep you occupied for weeks! While famous for its hot air balloons, Cappadocia offers so much more. There <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"are hiking trails all over the canyons (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/turkeytravelplanner.com\/go\/CentralAnatolia\/Cappadocia\/hiking.html\" target=\"_blank\">are hiking trails all over the canyons<\/a> surrounding G\u00f6reme, and on your journey, you\u2019ll uncover all sorts of hidden gems: from ancient cave churches to hidden vineyards and chilled-out cafes. I found the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Maps.me (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/maps.me\" target=\"_blank\">Maps.me<\/a> app super useful for navigating around poorly marked trails and crisscrossing routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most famous routes take you through Rose Valley and Red Valley. They\u2019re known for their distinctive rose and red colorings, respectively. This whole region was formed through ancient volcanic activity, creating the tuff stone that allowed for ancient people to carve out the honeycombing tunnel structures around Cappadocia. It\u2019s also the reason some of the valleys have their distinctive and gorgeous blush coloring. On both of these trails you will find caves to explore and the occasional caf\u00e9 to rehydrate at along the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My favorite hike is through <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Pigeon Valley (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.alaturkaturkey.com\/destinations\/pigeon-valley.html\" target=\"_blank\">Pigeon Valley<\/a>, which connects U\u00e7hisar to G\u00f6reme, so named for the carved pigeon roosts that dot the canyon side all along the route. The ancient people who used to live in the region raised pigeons for both food and fertilizer, and the sheer amount of roosts they carved is insane. It\u2019s also an incredibly beautiful hike with lush plants, great viewpoints, and lots of hidden vineyards. You start out walking along the canyon\u2019s edge with gorgeous panoramic views of the valleys and mountains until you arrive at a small caf\u00e9 overlooking the entrance to the valley. Then you descend and it\u2019s one of the deepest valleys with sheer cliff faces rising on either side of you. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-latitude=\"38.65535\" data-longitude=\"34.842548\" src=\"https:\/\/d39ghehfp8sbx4.cloudfront.net\/media\/img\/1\/fa55603e-4336-41b8-925f-1da5e8f9e036-1400.jpg?placeid=1052&amp;name=Rose%20Valley&amp;lat=38.65535&amp;lng=34.842548\" alt=\"Love Valley, Cappadocia, Turkey.\"\/><figcaption>Love Valley, Cappadocia, Turkey.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Take a hike through <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Love Valley (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kuriositas.com\/2012\/05\/love-valley-seeing-is-believing.html\" target=\"_blank\">Love Valley<\/a> to see some, um, very <em>hard<\/em> rocks, if you know what I mean. These natural structures are one of the region&#8217;s most famous sights. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a must-see part of the Cappadocian experience. Scattered around the museum grounds are ancient Christian churches dating between the 10th and 12th centuries. Because everything is well-labeled, it\u2019s not the kind of place you desperately need a tour group to get a good sense of, so I would recommend getting there early and exploring while you have the place to yourself. While wandering the museum, you\u2019ll enjoy a rare example of beautiful and well-preserved Christian frescoes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"marker-heading seeker-place seeker-place-heading\" data-latitude=\"38.628918\" data-longitude=\"34.803883\" data-placeurl=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/app\/place\/LZz9HfddH\/uchisar-turkey\" data-placeid=\"4365\" class=\"wp-block-seeker-place-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/app\/place\/LZz9HfddH\/uchisar-turkey\">&lt;strong>Visit the region&#8217;s largest rock castle&lt;\/strong><\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-latitude=\"38.628918\" data-longitude=\"34.803883\" src=\"https:\/\/d39ghehfp8sbx4.cloudfront.net\/media\/img\/1\/db08aab2-219e-4bf2-9da6-21571c710434-1400.jpg?placeid=4365&amp;name=U%C3%A7hisar&amp;lat=38.628918&amp;lng=34.803883\" alt=\"U&#xE7;hisar rock castle, Cappadocia, Turkey.\"\/><figcaption>U&#xE7;hisar rock castle, Cappadocia, Turkey.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>From the canyon ledge above G\u00f6reme, you can see a towering rock structure in the distance, sparkling with lights. That\u2019s <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"U\u00e7hisar (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/turkeytravelplanner.com\/go\/CentralAnatolia\/Cappadocia\/uchisar\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">U\u00e7hisar<\/a>, the remains of an ancient carved out rock castle that is unique outside of this region. While U\u00e7hisar is the most popular rock castle for tourists to visit, I recommend hopping on a <em><a href=\"https:\/\/turkeytravelplanner.com\/trans\/LocalTransport\/Dolmush.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"dolmush (opens in a new tab)\">dolmush<\/a><\/em> over to Ortahisar. It\u2019s a small town surrounding a smaller rock castle, but because it\u2019s a little off the beaten track, you can find accommodations for pretty cheap, making it a great place to stay as you explore Cappadocia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"marker-heading seeker-place seeker-place-heading\" data-latitude=\"38.353497\" data-longitude=\"35.091118\" data-placeurl=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/app\/place\/VgulHLQEa\/cappadocia-cappadocia-turkey\" data-placeid=\"1932\" class=\"wp-block-seeker-place-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/app\/place\/VgulHLQEa\/cappadocia-cappadocia-turkey\">Satisfy your need for speed with an ATV, horse or camel ride<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-latitude=\"38.353497\" data-longitude=\"35.091118\" src=\"https:\/\/d39ghehfp8sbx4.cloudfront.net\/media\/img\/1\/8bab5edf-c466-426c-b86c-fdc64c97809a-1400.jpg?placeid=1932&amp;name=Cappadocia&amp;lat=38.353497&amp;lng=35.091118\" alt=\"Horseback ride beneath hot air balloons, Cappadocia, Turkey. You\u2019re in luck. You can hop on a camel and experience a guided tour along the valley ridges. I recommend a sunrise camel ride (these tours often yield some pretty badass photos). You can also catch ATV and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"horseback tours (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kadost.com\" target=\"_blank\">horseback tours<\/a> any time of day, ranging from one to two hours, depending on your preferences. If you have the time, definitely give this a try. The whole region is dotted with them, but at the moment, only a few are open to tourists. These include <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Derinkuyu (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goreme.com\/derinkuyu-underground-city.php\" target=\"_blank\">Derinkuyu<\/a>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Kaymakli (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goreme.com\/kaymakli-underground-city.php\" target=\"_blank\">Kaymakli<\/a>, and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"\u00d6zkonak (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cappadociaturkey.net\/ozkonak_underground_city.htm\" target=\"_blank\">\u00d6zkonak<\/a>. These cities are massive interconnected underground superstructures that are unlike any cave structures elsewhere in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These caves are each hand-carved and date back approximately 6000 years. In the case of Derinkuyu, it was built to hold up to 20,000 people (plus livestock and goods in case the region\u2019s inhabitants needed a safe place to take refuge in). While exploring, you can go up to eight levels under the ground, with the city sitting just above you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If it\u2019s high tourist season, you\u2019re better off visiting Kaymakli or \u00d6zkonak, which are a little bit smaller than Derinkuyu, but also less-crowded and a little more lax in terms of where you can go and what you can explore. If you\u2019re planning on going with a tour, and it\u2019s not a bad idea because there is a lot to be learned with an experienced guide that you can\u2019t glean yourself from looking really closely at the rock, definitely do Derinkuyu. These are carved out of cliffs and fairy chimneys all over the region, so you almost have to work harder to <em>not<\/em> stay in a cave room than to find one! Or the parking lot. I actually thought I was in the wrong place until the door opened and<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" Katpatuka Camur  (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.katpatukamudcave.com\" target=\"_blank\"> Katpatuka Camur <\/a>appeared. The whole building is beautifully carved from stone, in keeping with the regional theme, and incredibly low lit. Over the fairy chimneys and canyon edges, more than a hundred hot air balloons take to the Cappadocia sky. As the first light starts to filter into the sky, you can already hear the low roar of balloons filling up in the distance. Sunset Point, also known as Lover\u2019s Hill, is the best place to get phenomenal (and very photogenic) views of the sunrise, and it often fills up with tourists who are almost as fun to watch as the sky itself. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And okay, if you&#8217;re <em>dying<\/em> to hop in a balloon and take it all in from a bird&#8217;s eye view, there will be plenty of opportunities.
