They don&#8217;t call Arizona the &#8220;Grand Canyon State&#8221; for nothin. But only 180 miles to the southwest of the Canyon sits <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/petrified-forest-national-park\/\" target=\"_blank\">Petrified Forest National Park<\/a>, with all its paleontology, petroglyphs, and vibrant badlands. And don&#8217;t forget <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Saguaro National Park (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/saguaro-national-park\/\" target=\"_blank\">Saguaro National Park<\/a>, just outside of Tucson, filled with giant tree-like blossoming desert cacti. Literally! UNESCO named it a World Heritage Site in 1979.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The grandeur of the canyon, which was created by the incision of the Colorado River some 50 to 250 million years ago, is better seen in person than conveyed in text or pictures. In the words of conservationist president Theodore Roosevelt, \u201cIt is beyond comparison\u2014beyond description.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/grand-canyon-national-park\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Grand Canyon National Park<\/a> is made up of the north and south rims, the latter of which accounts for 90 percent of all park visits for its accessibility. The southern area of the park offers 35 miles of driving routes where you can look out over panoramic views, while the North Rim, 220 miles away, stands at a higher elevation of 8,000 feet, offers scenic stops like <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hikingproject.com\/trail\/7003267\/point-imperial\" target=\"_blank\">Point Imperial<\/a>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Roosevelt Point (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/places\/000\/roosevelt-point.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Roosevelt Point<\/a>, and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Cape Royal (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.americansouthwest.net\/arizona\/grand_canyon\/cape-royal.html\" target=\"_blank\">Cape Royal<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though there are several overlooks that you won\u2019t want to miss, like the famous <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Skywalk (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/app\/place\/p5MsKZ_im\/grand-canyon-skywalk-peach-springs-arizona-us\" target=\"_blank\">Skywalk<\/a> which rises a dizzying 4,770 feet above the floor of the canyon, you\u2019ll want to go much deeper than a simple drive through the park. You can spend days backpacking on guided or solo tours, maybe on a 10-mile, meandering route to <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bemytravelmuse.com\/havasu-falls-hike\/#:~:text=The%20hike%20to%20Havasu%20Falls,campground%20and%20Havasu%20Falls%20itself.\" target=\"_blank\">Havasu Falls<\/a>, or perhaps <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/grca\/planyourvisit\/whitewater-rafting.htm\" target=\"_blank\">whitewater rafting<\/a> through the heart of the canyon, or even taking a mule tour into the most remote parts of the park\u2019s floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"marker-heading seeker-place seeker-place-heading\" data-latitude=\"35.065929\" data-longitude=\"-109.782043\" data-placeurl=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/app\/place\/yGugatBGp\/petrified-forest-national-park-arizona-us\" data-placeid=\"2263\" class=\"wp-block-seeker-place-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/app\/place\/yGugatBGp\/petrified-forest-national-park-arizona-us\">Petrified Forest National Park<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.seeker.io\/media\/img\/1\/dfed4ad6-daa1-4a7c-986c-817af86f2b35-1400.jpg?placeid=2263&amp;name=Petrified%20Forest%20National%20Park,%20Petrified%20Forest%20National%20Park&amp;lat=35.065929&amp;lng=-109.782043\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona, US. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s no better place to experience Arizona\u2019s rich history than in <a href=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/petrified-forest-national-park\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Petrified Forest National Park<\/a>. Throughout the park\u2019s 221,390 acres are fascinating preservations of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/pefo\/learn\/nature\/geologicformations.htm\" target=\"_blank\">225 million-year-old<\/a> trees-turned <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/pefo\/learn\/nature\/petrified-wood.htm\" target=\"_blank\">colorful quartz stones<\/a>. In addition to these natural wonders, Petrified Forest National Park is home to ancient pueblos, pit houses, petroglyphs, and pottery fossils that can be viewed from the car or on the trail.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Situated between modern day Navajo and Apache counties, the park contains remnants of human life from over 8,000 years ago. The sprawling ruins of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Puerco Pueblo (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/pefo\/learn\/historyculture\/puerco-pueblo.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Puerco Pueblo<\/a>, an 800-year-old dwelling with around 100 rooms, are easily accessible by a quarter mile trail, while the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Agate House (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/pefo\/learn\/historyculture\/agate-house.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Agate House<\/a>, which was occupied around 1100 to 1150 CE, was actually made from the pieces of petrified wood that visitors can see around the park today.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Arizona\u2019s Petrified Forest National Park is essential for history lovers and curious hikers alike. Its hieroglyphs and fossil collections will make you feel like you\u2019ve stumbled onto a scene from an old western, complete with colorful desert badlands and a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/pefo\/learn\/historyculture\/pdi.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Painted Desert Inn<\/a> built back in 1924. You can drive, bike, hike, or camp throughout the park\u2019s 346 square miles, or you can take advantage of the National Park Service\u2019s BYOH (bring your own horse) rules and southwestern \u2018scapes and ride a pack animal through the backcountry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"marker-heading seeker-place seeker-place-heading\" data-latitude=\"32.296738\" data-longitude=\"-111.166618\" data-placeurl=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/app\/place\/cB6ZfIi7D\/saguaro-national-park-arizona-us\" data-placeid=\"4868\" class=\"wp-block-seeker-place-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/app\/place\/cB6ZfIi7D\/saguaro-national-park-arizona-us\">Saguaro National Park<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.seeker.io\/media\/img\/1\/b1cf09b8-8f95-41ed-a896-2892ff27974f-1400.jpg?placeid=4868&amp;name=Saguaro%20National%20Park,%20&amp;lat=32.296738&amp;lng=-111.166618\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Saguaro National Park, Arizona, US.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Arizona\u2019s smallest national park is situated in the midst of the Sonoran Desert and is the only place in the world where you can find wild-growing saguaros. These <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/orpi\/learn\/nature\/saguaro-cactus.htm\" target=\"_blank\">tree-like cacti<\/a> can grow up to 40 feet tall, live for anywhere between 150 and 200 years, and were the main reason why the park\u2019s 92,000 acres of steppeland were designated a protected natural area in 1994. The presence of the saguaro creates a one-of-a-kind habitat, housing a complex ecosystem of cougars, bobcats, javelinas, gray foxes, jackrabbits, desert cottontails, ring-tailed cats, and white-nosed coatis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Saguaro National Park (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/saguaro-national-park\/\" target=\"_blank\">Saguaro National Park<\/a> is uniquely separated into two distinct sections: the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.americansouthwest.net\/arizona\/saguaro\/east.html\" target=\"_blank\">Rincon Mountain District<\/a>, which lies about 10 miles east of Tucson, and the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.americansouthwest.net\/arizona\/saguaro\/west.html\" target=\"_blank\">Tucson Mountain District<\/a>, 10 miles to the west.
