Simply put, it\u2019s not easy living in a world where your culture is constantly appropriated and commodified without credit. As a response, we&#8217;ve collectively begun carving out spaces of boldness and Blackness designed by us, for us. While joining <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Black travel groups (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/black-travel-groups\/\" target=\"_blank\">Black travel groups<\/a> and following\u00a0inspiring <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/top-black-travel-bloggers\/\" target=\"_blank\">Black travel bloggers<\/a> bring us together, there&#8217;s nothing <em>quite<\/em> like a party. The festival that seems to have emerged out of nowhere has become a big deal. In Portugal, Puerto Rico, and Ghana, Afronation attracts Black travelers that flock to the beach festival to witness their favorite Afrobeat, Hip Hop, and Reggae artists like Burna Boy, Wizkid, and French Montana. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Algarve region of Portugal, the festival takes place on Praia da Rocha, one of Portugal\u2019s most popular beaches. Imagine oceanside beach parties surrounded while your favorite artists play live in the background. Last year, the beach festival popped up in West Africa for the first time with its Ghana edition. The festival cofounders, Smade and Obi Asika, say the festival was born out of the need for opportunities for Afrobeats artists and to unify the African diaspora.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"marker-heading seeker-place seeker-place-heading\" data-latitude=\"51.507351\" data-longitude=\"-0.127758\" data-placeurl=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/app\/place\/FHkPhpu85\/london-england-united-kingdom\" data-placeid=\"1486\" class=\"wp-block-seeker-place-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/app\/place\/FHkPhpu85\/london-england-united-kingdom\">Yam Carnival 2023<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/article\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Untitled-design-9.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-31727\"\/><figcaption>Yam Carnival Festival. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/YamCarnivalEvents\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"@yamcarnival (opens in a new tab)\">@yamcarnival<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>YAM Carnival 2023: <\/strong>August 2023 (dates TBA)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"YAM Carnival  (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/yamcarnival.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">YAM Carnival<\/a> is new to the festival scene, but they\u2019re already making huge waves. The organizers from AfroNation are behind this one too, but aim to make the experience completely immersive. Beyond music, the celebration will bring together African cultures from around the world&#8211;think Curry and Jerk from the Caribbean, a Latin American pop up inspired by Brazil, New Orleans creole cuisine, and a continental African experience served from a makeshift Nigerian danfo bus.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For another twist on the traditional music festival, YAM promises masquerade performances honoring the centuries-old indigenous traditions of the Yoruba people of Western Nigeria and the Republic of Benin. What started as a safe space for Black alternative folks to express themselves through music and fashion has grown into a full-blown movement. From New York to Paris, Afropunk is a traveling festival, community, and outlet of creative expression for many. The stages of Afropunk feature Black artists across musical genres, from Solange to Lizzo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each year, AFROPUNK has a different theme. This year in Minneapolis, get ready for a weekend-long <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Juneteenth event (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/best-juneteenth-events\/\" target=\"_blank\">Juneteenth event<\/a>, with focuses on Midwestern music history and celebrations of Black history and joy. The best part about going to Afropunk is witnessing the fashion. In 1995, the first festival popped up in the Crescent City. Dubbed as the \u2018party with a purpose,\u2019 Essence has long been instrumental in bringing millions of dollars to the city\u2019s economy and creating a conjure of Black culture through music, food, and travel.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans in 2004, the Essence Fest team was on the ground providing aid and helping to rebuild the city. 2004 was the only year that the festival was held outside of Louisiana (it moved to Houston temporarily). Each year, festival goers are invited to celebrate Black culture with performances from artists like Janet Jackson and Beyonce. When concerts aren\u2019t happening, the community gathers at the convention center for celebrity panels, demos, and giveaways from brands like Shea Moisture.&nbsp;At Essence Fest, there is absolutely no shortage of love, pride, or &#8220;Sis, you look good&#8221; compliments.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"marker-heading seeker-place seeker-place-heading\" data-latitude=\"38.907192\" data-longitude=\"-77.036873\" data-placeurl=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/app\/place\/odge7td2\/washington-district-of-columbia-us\" data-placeid=\"549\" class=\"wp-block-seeker-place-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/app\/place\/odge7td2\/washington-district-of-columbia-us\">Something In The Water 2023<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/article\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Untitled-design-4-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-31721\"\/><figcaption>Something in the Water Festival. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/somethinginthewater\/\" target=\"_blank\">@somethinginthewater<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Something In The Water 2023:<\/strong> April 28th &#8211; April 30th, 2023<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What began in 2019 by the musical icon and Virginia native, Pharrell, continues to grow into one of the coolest Black music festivals on the East Coast. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/somethinginthewater.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Something In The Water<\/a> is a mashup of hip hop culture from the West, East, and South of the US. This year, the festival heads to Washington D.C. to <a href=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/best-juneteenth-events\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"celebrate Juneteenth (opens in a new tab)\">celebrate Juneteenth<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the musical part of the experience is held on Independence Ave,  Pharell has curated extended programming throughout the week across the city. Owned and operated by four Black women, The Curly Collective is on a mission to uplift and empower Black women and girls while redefining what the world\u2019s standards of beauty look like. Every year, the festival takes over Randall\u2019s Island Park in New York for a full day of beauty, music, food, and Black culture.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brands that are well-loved in the natural hair community, like DevaCurl and Creme of Nature, set up interactive booths featuring on-the-spot braid bars, photo booths, and onsite shopping experiences. Art lovers can watch paintings come to life at CurlFest\u2019s Arts District. The enormous fest, which first kicked off in 1975, takes over a dozen-block radius in the&nbsp;Graduate Hospital&nbsp;neighborhood, gathering hundreds of vendors from around the world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"marker-heading seeker-place seeker-place-heading\" data-latitude=\"33.748997\" data-longitude=\"-84.387985\" data-placeurl=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/app\/place\/nQNT5aV9-\/atlanta-georgia-us\" data-placeid=\"1740\" class=\"wp-block-seeker-place-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/app\/place\/nQNT5aV9-\/atlanta-georgia-us\">One Music Festival 2023<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/article\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Untitled-design-7-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-31724\"\/><figcaption>One Music Festival. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"@onemusicfest (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/onemusicfest\/\" target=\"_blank\">@onemusicfest<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>One Music Festival 2023:<\/strong> October 28th &#8211; 29th, 2023<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Often referred to as the music capital of America, and most certainly of hip hop, Atlanta\u2019s <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.onemusicfest.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">One Music Festival <\/a>should be on your list. For 10 years, the festival has been bridging the gap between old and new. Past lineups have included the likes of Wu-Tang Clan and Musiq Soulchild alongside Gucci Mane and Summer Walker. The one-day event held in Centennial Park is also loved for its live art installations and extensive food truck village. In 2019, Slutty Vegan, a popular Black-owned vegan restaurant in Atlanta was on-site at the festival.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As travelers, it\u2019s important to support local festivals just as much as we do global ones. One Music Fest is the largest festival in the Southeast and directly pumps money into the local economy. Dedicated to the belief that diverse artists deserve the same opportunities as their mainstream counterparts, ABFF Founder Jeff Friday conceived the festival in 1997 as a vehicle to strengthen the Black entertainment community by fostering resource sharing, education and artistic collaboration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"marker-heading seeker-place seeker-place-heading\" data-latitude=\"5.603717\" data-longitude=\"-0.186964\" data-placeurl=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/app\/place\/0IEgFUXRr\/accra-greater-accra-region-ghana\" data-placeid=\"1749\" class=\"wp-block-seeker-place-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/app\/place\/0IEgFUXRr\/accra-greater-accra-region-ghana\">Chale Wote Street Art Festival 2023<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/article\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Untitled-design-8.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-31725\"\/><figcaption>Chale Wote Street Art Festival. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/chalewoteofficial\/\" target=\"_blank\">@chalewoteofficial<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Chale Wote Street Art Festival 2023: <\/strong>August 21st &#8211; 27th, 2023<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During a recent trip to Ghana, I asked my Ghanaian friends about the best time to visit again, they all pointed to <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/accradotaltradio.com\/chale-wote-street-art-festival\/\" target=\"_blank\">Chale Wote&nbsp;Street Art Festival<\/a>, an art festival held every August in Accra. Since 2011, Chale Wote has been bringing some of the world\u2019s best Black artists to Ghana for a celebration of art appreciation in the form of an open-air street gallery.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From live paintings to spoken word, no art form is left unexplored.
