The restaurant sits atop the lofty hill of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Monserrate (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/app\/place\/VsTqe32I5\/monserrate-bogota-bogota-colombia\" target=\"_blank\">Monserrate<\/a>, with seasonally rotating gastronomy accompanied by candlelight and a ceiling composed of wood beams. I didn\u2019t stay for dinner, but the <em>vino caliente<\/em> (spiced warm wine) was an incredible treat for the misty rain that greeted me at the hilltop. The sprawling hammock at <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.casaelemento.co\/\" target=\"_blank\">Casa Elemento<\/a> in <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Minca (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/app\/place\/fFcfBm7Dl\/minca-magdalena-colombia\" target=\"_blank\">Minca<\/a> has enough space for three times that crowd, complete with a view of the misty Sierra Nevada Mountains and even the city of <a href=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/app\/place\/BaS-flO4s\/santa-marta-magdalena-colombia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Santa Marta (opens in a new tab)\">Santa Marta<\/a> on a clear day. This sky-high hangout is part of a hostel, but taking a quick peek seemed to be alright (at least when I randomly showed up via a new local friend\u2019s motorbike). It\u2019s just like any other church in terms of contents: it has an altar, pews, and even some assorted marble sculptures. It\u2019s as beautiful as it is puzzling and open for visits every day, except Sunday when service takes place. You can trek your way through the park via a myriad of trails with twists and turns revealing some of the most stunning shores along the way. You even have the option of spending the night within the park between three different campgrounds. I have a knack for walking aimlessly until I get tired, so I ended up at a site called <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Cabo San Juan (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/app\/place\/dHL3o5CWG\/cabo-san-juan-del-guia-magdalena-colombia\" target=\"_blank\">Cabo San Juan<\/a>\u2014the farthest (and most sought after) campsite. Here, you can sleep in a hammock with a sea breeze or opt for a tent just steps from the shore. I had never heard of one before <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/app\/place\/wYgPDzCk0\/el-totumo-catalina-colombia\" target=\"_blank\">El Totumo Mud Volcano<\/a>, an active mini-volcano near <a href=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/app\/place\/knsMHYp2_\/cartagena-bolivar-colombia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Cartagena<\/a>. It can accommodate around 10-15 mud-seeking bathers at a time, so come prepared to participate because this muddy marvel definitely isn\u2019t a spectator sport. A taste of Cuba (and some strong spirits) lies in this corner cabaret, with an expansive wrap-around bar and live performers onstage each night. It\u2019s definitely not a secret anymore, but it lives up to the hype. I had the chance of catching the bartender for one last round before closing, after most of the dancing crowd had departed. The diving opportunities, however, are anything but small. I might have spent most of my time lounging in my hostel pool, but I came across plenty of opportunities for both learners and seasoned divers for a super reasonable price. A Parisian style bakery that can compete with the likes of France was the last thing I expected to find in Minca, Colombia, but lo and behold, a surprise waits on every corner. <a href=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/app\/place\/niZtu5R4z\/la-miga-bakery-santa-marta-magdalena-colombia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">La Miga Bakery<\/a> was a happy accident, a beacon of light in the middle of being stranded with nowhere to stay. As it turns out, the owner is French (which explains some things) and all of the offerings are downright scrumptious. On a whim, I rented a motorbike in <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Guatap\u00e9 (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/app\/place\/b-pLl-4-P\/guatape-antioquia-colombia\" target=\"_blank\">Guatap\u00e9<\/a> and spent an entire day whipping around tight bends in the road and marveling over verdant valleys, eventually ending up in a small town called <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"San Rafael (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/app\/place\/b-pLl-4-P\/guatape-antioquia-colombia\" target=\"_blank\">San Rafael<\/a>. There are a few treasured swimming holes nearby, so bring a suit if you\u2019re keen on a refreshing dip. Just don\u2019t try to take your motorbike on the seriously rocky pathway to it like I did. The local <a href=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/app\/place\/_mNc3HQwM\/astronomical-observatory-tatacoa-oata-villavieja-huila-colombia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Tatocoa Observatory<\/a> features high-powered telescopes, however, the stars are pretty fabulous to the naked eye (thanks to Tatacoa\u2019s proximity to the equator). Why, you might ask? Tubing. <em>Lots of it<\/em>. You can lackadaisically glide down the river from the jungle to the sea, all while sipping a beer. There\u2019s no need to book in advance\u2014just take a walk down Palomino\u2019s main street (there\u2019s only one, really) and you\u2019ll find some local gents ready to take you to the best starting spots via motorbike. Some of my fondest arepa memories took place here, which is a bold statement. Each arepa is made to order, grilled right in front of you, then turned over to you to decide how to properly adorn it with all of the sauces on deck. They had traditional recipes, along with some more inventive options (tried most, loved all). Nowadays, it\u2019s home to the city\u2019s best street art, live performers, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"digital nomads (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/best-cities-for-digital-nomads\/#\/\" target=\"_blank\">digital nomads<\/a>, and curious visitors. It even made our list of the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"best places to travel in 2020 (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/2020-travel-trends\/\" target=\"_blank\">best places to travel in 2020<\/a>. The history of the area is well worth learning about, and the sheer sprawl of the buildings up onto the mountainside is a mind-boggling sight. This neighborhood is the epicenter of nightlife in Medell\u00edn (one of them, anyway), and the party packs a powerful punch. Specifically, a tiny square called <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Parque Lleras (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/app\/place\/wMCNymG82\/parque-lleras-medellin-antioquia-colombia\" target=\"_blank\">Parque Lleras<\/a> is where most of the bars and clubs are. Take your pick from Colombian tunes to international DJs; you\u2019ll never have to compromise with all of the offerings available. My personal favorite was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/salonamador\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Salon Amador<\/a>, a lounge-inspired trendy club with both indoor and outdoor rooms. The space contains over 55,000 pieces of gold (among other ancient treasures) and the selection truly doesn\u2019t play around. There\u2019s an odd calmness to the museum, with most rooms under dim lighting to allow the real treasure to shimmer and shine. This ornate palace makes the cast of Goldmember jealous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"marker-heading seeker-place seeker-place-heading\" data-latitude=\"6.223611\" data-longitude=\"-75.178329\" data-placeurl=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/app\/place\/yOnZH97FD\/el-penon-de-guatape-guatape-antioquia-colombia\" data-placeid=\"3939\" class=\"wp-block-seeker-place-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/app\/place\/yOnZH97FD\/el-penon-de-guatape-guatape-antioquia-colombia\">Climb El Pe\u00f1\u00f3n de Guatap\u00e9<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-latitude=\"6.223611\" data-longitude=\"-75.178329\" src=\"https:\/\/d39ghehfp8sbx4.cloudfront.net\/media\/img\/1\/e92e0be2-c6e1-4049-9196-887719094359-1400.jpg?placeid=3939&amp;name=El%20Pe%C3%B1%C3%B3n%20de%20Guatap%C3%A9&amp;lat=6.223611&amp;lng=-75.178329\" alt=\"El Pe&#xF1;&#xF3;n de Guatap&#xE9;, Colombia.\"\/><figcaption>El Pe&#xF1;&#xF3;n de Guatap&#xE9;, Colombia.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In short, it\u2019s a giant rock with 650 stairs on it. But wait, <em>there\u2019s more<\/em>. This mammoth-like monolith happens to be in the most idyllic location that a massive boulder could possibly be placed. Surrounding Guatap\u00e9 is every lake vacation you\u2019ve ever dreamed about wrapped into one, with a zesty Colombian twist. The top of <a href=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/app\/place\/yOnZH97FD\/el-penon-de-guatape-guatape-antioquia-colombia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">El Pe\u00f1\u00f3n<\/a> overlooks a swirly wonderland of lakes and greenery, a strong contender for the best view in the country. Honestly, I had a fabulous time taking in the views merely from ground level, but if you\u2019re down to pay the entry fee of about $6 USD, it\u2019s worth the climb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"marker-heading seeker-place seeker-place-heading\" data-latitude=\"10.427993\" data-longitude=\"-75.548187\" data-placeurl=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/app\/place\/8hDjlZ8j8\/la-cevicheria-bolivar-bolivar-colombia\" data-placeid=\"3940\" class=\"wp-block-seeker-place-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/app\/place\/8hDjlZ8j8\/la-cevicheria-bolivar-bolivar-colombia\">Try some fancy ceviche at La Cevicher\u00eda<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-latitude=\"10.427993\" data-longitude=\"-75.548187\" src=\"https:\/\/d39ghehfp8sbx4.cloudfront.net\/media\/img\/1\/cd6b087f-48a3-420a-89c2-193974986e47-1400.jpg?placeid=3940&amp;name=La%20Cevicher%C3%ADa&amp;lat=10.427993&amp;lng=-75.548187\" alt=\"Ceviche in Colombia, Colombia.\"\/><figcaption>Ceviche in Colombia, Colombia.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ll never pass up ceviche served right off the street from a man with a cart (call me a daredevil). Having said that, the wondrous outdoor patio at Cartagena\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/lacevicheriacartagena.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">La Cevicher\u00eda<\/a> caught my eye and the menu ended up being one of the best culinary experiences I\u2019ve had during my travels in South America. As it turns out, Anthony Bourdain shared this opinion, and the restaurant has earned international notoriety as a result. Their ceviche is mouth watering, noticeably fresher than the competition, and packed with herbaceous, citrusy flavor. Travelers across the Caribbean traded stories of El Rio, ranging from <em>ohmygod it was incredible<\/em> to <em>it was sold out and I\u2019m so bummed<\/em>. The grounds are focused on fostering a community atmosphere, with family-style dinners and daily group activities ranging from river tubing to dance-filled happy hours. Social butterflies will thrive here. As if coffee and beer weren\u2019t enough to satisfy, you can also stay right on the grounds at <a href=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/app\/place\/AZFbCyCuW\/casas-viejas-hostel-lodge-minca-magdalena-colombia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Casa Viejas<\/a>, a mid-jungle oasis that matches the historical charm of the rest of the grounds. This archaeological site looks like a fusion between Machu Picchu and Jurassic Park, with a deeply secluded, jungle-shrouded location that can only be hiked to over the course of 4-6 days. You won\u2019t find any busses to the top here. Ancient, moss-covered rock platforms have been forgotten by time, taken over by the biodiverse surroundings. The only sounds you\u2019ll hear are birds, wind, and bugs. Most guides for the experience are indigenous locals, allowing for trekkers to learn about cultures and traditions of different groups that occupy the Sierra Nevada. She sold <em>arepas de huevo<\/em>, delectable deep-fried snacks filled with eggs, meat, or veggies. For me, she really went the extra mile to help me out as a non-meat eater. The rooms are filled with all types of odd accouterments, from hanging wagons to old school hair dryers. All of the seats are theater style and the walls are covered in random art pieces that don\u2019t seem to correlate to one another. I can\u2019t say the food was better than the decorations, but it\u2019s worth a visit regardless. On first impression, I regretted my arrival. The sand was crowded, assorted trash bobbed near the shore, and it was nothing like what I imagined. After picking a direction and walking to escape that area, the crowds disappeared entirely, a wonderful skyline across the bay emerged, and I stumbled upon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/miramarbc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Miramar Beach Club<\/a>: an enchantingly empty beach bar complete with a pool and cabana beds. Some will walk, some will ride motorcycles, some will hire moto taxis by locals who look like they might not be old enough to drive. You\u2019ll make it one way or another. It\u2019s only about 10 minutes from town, plus a bit of a hike down from the road to step foot on the banks of the river. The water is a bit chilly, but undeniably refreshing at the same time, and you can\u2019t beat the surroundings.
