But how do you differentiate between ethical eco-friendly experiences and others that aren\u2019t so earnest? If you\u2019re headed to the tropical biodiverse land of <a href=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/wp-admin\/post.php?post=11578&amp;action=edit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"sloths (opens in a new tab)\">sloths<\/a> and macaws and are considering booking a tour, we\u2019ve got you covered with everything you need to know (and more).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Authentic ecotourism will prioritize people, planet, and wildlife. I was fortunate enough to spend two months in Costa Rica and fill my days with sustainable \u2014and unforgettable\u2014 travel experiences. Ecotourism tours in Costa Rica usually focus on prolific wildlife observation, epic adventures in the great outdoors, or a mix of the two. Before you\u2019re ready to book a tour, decide which areas of Costa Rica you\u2019d like to explore and determine the wildlife you\u2019d be thrilled to encounter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a rough guide, Many reputable tour operators in the country have received the Certificate of <a href=\"https:\/\/explore.seeker.io\/blog\/sustainable-tourism\">Sustainable Tourism<\/a>, but don\u2019t rule out a company just because they haven\u2019t yet been recognized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sadly, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.impacttravelalliance.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Impact Travel Alliance<\/a> reports that greenwashing has led to sustainable places undergoing green hushing, which is described as the \u201cdeliberate under communication of sustainable initiatives.\u201d Greenwashing has made eco-friendly businesses wary of backlash due to potential skepticism. Booking ecotourism tours in Costa Rica can be a bit challenging. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During my two months exploring Costa Rica, I booked ecotourism experiences with <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.desafiocostarica.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Desafio Adventure Company<\/a> and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tucanestours.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tucanes Tours<\/a>. I also went on many eco-conscious tours offered by the eco-resorts where I stayed including <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Finca Rosa Blanca (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/app\/place\/fPUWFIW6\/finca-rosa-blanca-coffee-plantation-resort-santa-barbara-heredia-costa-rica\" target=\"_blank\">Finca Rosa Blanca<\/a>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Cala Luna (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/app\/place\/zk-NXzlmd\/cala-luna-vacation-villas-tamarindo-provincia-de-guanacaste-costa-rica\" target=\"_blank\">Cala Luna<\/a>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Rancho Margot (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/app\/place\/nLflSsjS\/rancho-margot-eco-lodge-el-castillo-provincia-de-alajuela-costa-rica\" target=\"_blank\">Rancho Margot<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/app\/place\/VwOZ_gZ8\/the-retreat-costa-rica-atenas-alajuela-province-costa-rica\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"The Retreat (opens in a new tab)\">The Retreat<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Greenwashing is minimally regulated, so responsible travelers will have to do their research and watch for red flags, such as phony jargon and slick advertising meant to fool the consumer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Red flags to keep an eye out for when researching potential ecotourism tours in Costa Rica:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/shutterstock_125014706.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13593\"\/><figcaption>Sloth in Costa Rica. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u25cf&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Are there photos of people holding or feeding wildlife? If so, this is not genuine ecotourism as travelers should never interact with wildlife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u25cf&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Are there photos of animals in cages? Sadly, Costa Rica has very few genuine conservation projects for ill or injured wildlife, so it\u2019s best to avoid any place with animals in captivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u25cf&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Does the website or staff have readily available details on the tour\u2019s eco efforts? If you\u2019re noticing a lot of buzzwords but no concrete information as to why the tour is eco, then it probably isn\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u25cf&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Do the staff get annoyed if you ask a lot of questions? It\u2019s your right to get the full picture of the extent of what makes the tour eco.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Some questions to ask when booking ecotourism tours in Costa Rica:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/seeker.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/shutterstock_1158369922.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13594\"\/><figcaption>Tortugero National Park, Costa Rica.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u25cf&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Are the majority of employees local, even in upper management positions?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u25cf&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; What sort of training or licenses do the tour guides and operators have?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u25cf&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; How does the tour operator minimize its plastic waste?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u25cf&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Do they guarantee animal sightings? This should never be done as we can\u2019t promise when wild animals will come out and say hello.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u25cf&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; If you\u2019re going on a multi-day experience, what kind of accommodations are you staying in? Costa Rica has so many eco-friendly hotels and local guesthouses and true ecotours will support these like-minded businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Going on an ecotourism tour in Costa Rica is sure to be a memorable experience. Eco tours focus on local culture and people and ensure your money goes to businesses that support animal conservation and preservation of nature. By supporting conservation efforts, you\u2019ll be a part of the ongoing efforts to preserve the phenomenal nature and animal kingdom in Costa Rica.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a1Pura Vida!
