The name of Lake Trasimeno might strike fear into the heart of a certain Gaius Flaminius (classics grads alone will appreciate that joke), but it’s music to the ears of anyone exploring central Italy. A shimmering expanse of blue under the wooded Apennines of Northern Umbria, it’s famed as the site of one of the bloodiest military encounters between the Romans and the Carthaginians. These days, grassy lidos fringe the banks by Castiglione. There’s also a grand castle there, rising high with its donjons raised by Frederick II, Holy Roman Emperor, back in 1247.
