Crater Lake National Park

A caldera in Oregon filled with deep blue water, noted for its striking beauty and the cinder cone island rising from its surface.

Tips from the community

Just when you thought the West Coast couldn’t give you anymore scorchers on the national park front, Oregon comes up with the magnificent Crater Lake National Park. The deepest of its kind in the whole United States, it descends more than 1,900 feet from its perfect blue surface through the core of an ancient volcano high up in the Cascades. Sections of the Pacific Crest Trail weave their way through the park, so there’s a steady stream of thru hikers. Meanwhile, the scenic Rim Drive means roadsters can also get their fix of high mountain scenery with ease.

Setting eyes on the deepest lake in the US is sure to cool you down just a tad. Getting to Crater Lake National Park takes you high into the Oregon Cascades, amid scented pines and summits. The spot is a highlight of the uber-long Pacific Crest Trail.

The 33-mile Scenic Rim Drive offers panoramic vistas of the lake, meadows, and forests. There are more than 30 overlooks to check out sites of the lake and surrounding area. There are also five picnic spots off the drive and plenty of trailheads.

Crater Lake National Park is one of the most pristine lakes in the US, along with being the deepest. Formed over 7000 years ago by a volcanic eruption, the surrounding area features plenty of trails to explore the rocky landscapes and wilderness.
