United States Illinois

Chicago

A major city in the Midwest known for its iconic skyline, deep-dish pizza, jazz music, historic architecture, and as the "Windy City."

Tips from the community

We all know that Chicago goes all out for St. Patrick’s Day, so it’s no surprise that the entire city comes together for Cinco de Mayo, too. Start with the parade from Little Village that leads to the festivities at Douglas Park with local marching bands, mariachi bands, and beautifully decorated parade floats. Then head to some of the local restaurants for food and drink specials, like a spicy Mexican chocolate cupcake at Sugar Bliss Bakery, or City Winery Riverwalk for drink specials and river views. Grab your partner and let the music take you away with a dance party and salsa lesson at Duet Dance Studios. Now that you’re a salsa dancing pro, it’s time to head out on the water for a proper Cinco de Mayo party cruise on Lake Michigan.

You can (literally) sing the blues in Chicago, which is the epicenter of blues music in America. During The Great Migration from 1910 to 1970, six million African Americans left the South and settled in the urban Northeast, West, and Midwest, including Chicago. They brought with them the sounds of the Mississippi Delta, transforming the blues sound and bringing it to prominence worldwide. The annual Chicago Blues Fest carries on this musical tradition each summer with three days of blues performances.

Chicago is one of the most humble tourist spots in the US, with a unique energy all its own, far from the bustling streets of New York or the sparkle of LA.
