Tips from the community

Flemish Béguinages refers to the group of unique urban residential complexes that were predominantly inhabited by unmarried or widowed women in the Middle Ages, known as beguines. Established in Mechelen Vlaanderen, Belgium in the 13th century, these 13 beguinages offer an exceptional illustration of the evolution of this type of community-based religious and social organization, most of which were dismantled in the 18th and 19th centuries. Today, they are revered as World Heritage Sites in Europe and are now open to visitors who wish to discover the spiritual and cultural heritage of Flemish culture.
