United States Maine Maine

Great Duck Island Lighthouse

A historic beacon established in 1890 to aid navigation in the Gulf of Maine, now an automated light and a center for ecological research.

Tips from the community

Built a little later than some of the other Maine lighthouses this 1890 light was erected with a red daytime light to lead ships into Mt Desert Island, and with a fog horn signal so ships entering the harbor in the thick summer fog would still be able to find their way.

Historic buildings that would guide sailors to the coast from around the world, these are some of Maine's most picturesque lighthouses. From Portland Head Light all the way up to West Quoddy Head Lighthouse in Lubec, you could take a week long road trip to try to see them all!
