With sections of this mysterious lake frequently turning to an otherworldly red color, it was only natural to include Lake Natron in our rainbow list. A truly breathtaking sight, this eerily beautiful body of water has a dark side- the alkaline levels and residue from a nearby volcano combine to make a poisonous concoction. Animal corpses of those who veered too close can be discovered nearby the hypnotic red waters.
There’s nothing quite like a mineral-rich soda lake on a hot day, eh? Despite sounding totally drinkable, Lake Natron’s wow-worthy rosy waters are best experienced with the eyes (and from a bird’s eye view!). Nearby, you’ll find waterfalls and flamingos, since they happen to have made the area their breeding ground. To make things even more interesting: The lake is nestled at the base of Ol Doinyo Lengai — an active volcano in Tanzania’s Rift Valley. What I’m trying to say is, it’s hardcore as hell.
Lake Natron in Tanzania is one of the most serene lakes in Africa, but also the one of the most deadly. “The alkaline water in Lake Natron has a pH as high as 10.5 and is so caustic it can burn the skin and eyes of animals that aren’t adapted to it.” After the temp heats up, the bacteria present inside the pond exude a red pigment, resulting in a stunning deep pink color.
