Tips from the community

Located at the point where the Middle East meets Asia, the tiny peninsular state of Qatar has long been a melting pot of cultures. With a staggering array of cultural venues, including museums, galleries and public art, Qatar offers a potent mix of tradition and modernism. Spelled in the ancient manner, Katara is a self-styled cultural village nestled between the gleaming financial district of West Bay, and the half-moon towers of The Pearl residential neighborhood. Bordered by a vast beach on one side, and the twin Katara Hills on the other, Katara is Doha’s go-to destination for art, culture and cuisine. In no particular order, these are the top things to do here: 1. Visit the Katara Mosque 2. Visit the Gold Mosque 3. Discover the Amphitheatre 4. Explore 21 High Street 5. Check out the art galleries 6. Explore Al Thuraya Planetarium 7. Enjoy beach activities 8. Walk at the Katara Hills 9. Taste local flavours

Qatar has been ruled by the House of Thani since Mohammed bin Thani signed a treaty with the British in 1868 that recognized its separate status. Following Ottoman rule, Qatar became a British protectorate in the early 20th century until gaining independence in 1971. In 2003, the constitution was overwhelmingly approved in a referendum, with almost 98% in favor. In the 21st century, Qatar emerged as a significant power in the Arab world and also globally. The 2022 FIFA World Cup will be held in Qatar, making it the first Muslim and Arab country to host the event. The 2030 Asian Games will be held in Qatar.
