Alright, there’s a sh*tload of
cool things to do in China, but
Harbin Ice Festival definitely holds one of the top spots on the list. This downright sprawling snow and ice metropolis is made from 120,000 cubic meters of ice and 111,000 cubic meters of snow, and it’s
s(no)w joke. While blindingly bleach-white under the sun, it transforms into a bluish-purple wonderland once the sun goes down thanks to creative lighting and colorful effects. It’s way up in the northeastern portion of the country, so please, don’t forget those toasty mittens.

Harbin, in Northeastern Heilongjiang province, annually hosts the
world’s biggest ice festival. Bordering Siberia, the city is colloquially known as ‘The City of Ice’ and for anyone traveling through China in winter, the Harbin festival is the perfect destination to catch some winter sports with the locals. You could easily spend days in the four separate theme parks admiring the towering ice sculptures, which feature everything from illuminated fairy-tale castles that you can explore, to gigantic ice slides, and recreations of famous statues around the world. The festival initially started in 1963, normally starts in January, and lasts a month. The festival opens with a dazzling fireworks display and offers daily entertainment, competitions, and wonderful local food. Make sure you dress warm for this teeth-chattering festival!

Harbin Ice Festival is, by far, one of the
coolest things to do in China. Over 120,000 cubic meters of ice and 111,000 cubic meters of snow are used to create this winter wonderland, hand-crafted by famous ice sculptors from around the country. It’s not just replicas of famous buildings though; you’ll find snow slides, sledding, skating, and over two thousand snowmen. And it’s all lit up with beautiful lights so the fun lasts well into the night. If you’re feeling brave, you can try snow swimming. Don’t miss the opening ceremony with fireworks and music.
