Taos Pueblo

An ancient Native American community in NM, known for its adobe structures and continuous habitation for over 1,000 years.

Tips from the community

Taos Pueblo is the only active Native American community designated both a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and a National Historic Landmark. The clay-and-turquoise adobe buildings have been continuously occupied for over a 1,000 years. Exploring is encouraged, but don’t forget to respect the “restricted area” signs, put in place to protect the privacy of current residents and sites of religious practices. Honorable Mentions: Taos Ski Valley, Tsankawi Prehistoric Sites, Ten Thousand Waves, Tinkertown, Truth or Consequences

The pueblos in Taos are considered some of the oldest continuously inhabited communities in the US, and I find them incredibly fascinating. The architecture alone is cool to walk around and look at, and the surrounding desert is also super beautiful.

I'm headed to New Mexico in December and am planning a totally solo, COVID-safe getaway with my pup Fiona. We snagged a casita between Santa Fe & Taos and plan to hit all the best hikes within reach. Food stops are for take-out only, national parks will be visited on off-days, and museums will have to be saved for the next trip (RIP Meow Wolf).
