International Wine Competition in Houston, and a 12-bottle case went for $105,000 at the Houston Rodeo Uncorked Wine Auction (a Washington wine auction record).

  A can’t-miss stop on the Southside of Walla Walla is Va Piano Vineyards, known for their exceptional wines, beautiful Tuscany-themed tasting room, and signature laid-back hospitality. We highly recommend the Black Label Sauvignon Blanc and Syrah. A gorgeous lawn with plenty of space for picnic tables and comfortable lawn furniture accommodate guests during warmer weather visits, when the tasting room is really bustling. Va Piano is an especially great spot if you’re visiting with younger (read: not of legal drinking age) travelers. There are very friendly winery dogs on site most days to frolic across the lawn and entertain them.

  For magnificent views and equally magnificent wines, you’ll want to visit Amavi Cellars. Their patio is the perfect setting for sipping on delicious Sémillon or members-only Ceres red blend while enjoying the beautiful Blue Mountains. If the weather doesn’t accommodate patio enjoyment, never fear! You can still use the telescope in the tasting room to peer beyond the valley to the mountains beyond. There are several neatly arranged areas to taste and visit privately in the Amavi Cellars tasting room, and their hospitality team strikes the perfect balance of attentive and knowledgeable without being at the table every 5 minutes. Amavi Cellars is a great entry point to the Southside, with approachable wines to suit a variety of palates.

  Abeja Winery produces iconic Washington wines and is located on a beautiful centuries-old historic farmhouse estate, about four miles east of Walla Walla. Visit Abeja for a seated tasting in the historic Small Barn for a selection of Beekeeper and Columbia Valley selections and a brief overview of Abeja. Or plan to enjoy the Abeja Estate Experience, which opens with a walking tour of Abeja’s winery and historic farmstead. Views of the scenic Mill Creek Estate vineyards, creeks, gardens, and panoramic views showcase the important role nature has to play in everything they do at Abeja. After the tour, your host will guide you through a seated tasting flight of single-vineyard wines from Abeja’s Mill Creek and Heather Hill estate vineyards, including a special selection from their library, all paired with a seasonal selection of artisan cheeses and charcuterie.

  K Vintners is winemaker Charles Smith’s first winemaking project, which started with 330 cases of 1990 K Syrah sold out of the back of Charles’ 1987 Astro van. Charles Smith went on to become one of only four Washington winemakers to receive a 100 point score (for the 2006 Royal City Syrah). He has created and sold several iconic wine labels (House Wines and Charles Smith Wines), and even launched one of the most ambitious plantings in Washington State with his Golden West Pinot Noir project. K Vintners is only open to the public in this location during the spring and summer, and they do require a reservation. Even if you aren’t able to get a reservation at K Vintners, make sure to stop for the photo op in front of the giant K that sits on the outskirts of Phil Lane Estate Vineyard, which you’ll drive right past on your way back into town.

  Walla Walla Vintners was the Walla Walla Valley’s 8th winery, and crafts wines with a true sense of place including traditional Bordeaux varietals like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, as well as Sangiovese, Malbec and Syrah. Their Cut Bank Estate red wines are reserved for wine club members and sell out quickly, so consider a membership if you want to take advantage of all that this historic winery has to offer.

  one of the founding wineries in the Walla Walla Valley. The winery and tasting room are located in the historic Whitehouse-Crawford building in downtown Walla Walla, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Built as a wood mill in 1904, the building underwent restoration in 2000 to house the winery and preserve its architectural integrity. The locale is lovely but the wines are what you’ll be talking about later. At Seven Hills Winery, the focus is crafting Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines that authentically reflect their places of origin. You’ll also find a delicious dry Rosé in the summer months, sure to be your go-to porch sipping wine long after your getaway. In addition to the most traditional Bordeaux varietals, you’ll discover some of the unsung heroes of the region, like Seven Hills Winery limited-production Carmenere.
